I hate when sports fans say "we" and "our" when they talk about their favorite teams. You're not a member of the team. You did not play the game of your life last week. You did not win a big championship last year. Stop it.

Maybe we're just true fans of OUR home teams and WE'RE the ones that help them get to the championship through our support... Ever think of that? Dick...

Ugh, I know!! Everyone in my family is obsessed with sports except for me, and they constantly talk about how "we" lost the other night or whatever. Get. A. Life.

@Steve I think you are missing the point. The OP is saying that you didn't play so it's not YOUR team. If you were to randomly stop rooting for your team, it's not like they would do any worse. Not to mention that the 99% of the fans NOT at the stadium can't possibly help the team since the team can't actually see them.

I don't know anyone that says that.

Totally appropriate if you go to that school, university, etc. Ex. We, the University of Awesome, did a great job last week in our game versus the University of Crap. Pro teams, eh, not as much reason behind it.

Sports teams cost money, without fans where does that money come from? Sure a rich entrepreneur has the money to start a team, but with the millions of dollars of expenses they wouldn't make it long without fans to purchase their product. We are our own entertainment, because it wouldn't exist if we weren't here to be entertained. That's why we're a part of the team.

I don't know about elsewhere and in other sports, but here you can buy a membership to your favourite football club which gives you tickets to all of their home games etc. So in that case, although you're not out there playing each weekend, you ARE a member of the club. That would have to give you some right to say 'we', no?

@ eloquentegotism - A membership to a club is different to a membership to a team. You are a member of the club but I don't see how that gives you any special privilege to call yourself a part of the team. You yourself didn't in fact win any championship, the team did. You didn't play the winning match. You don't get to call yourself part of the team. Fans do not count as part of the team, they're just there to spectate, they aren't playing, they're watching. You may support them but you still don't count as the team, you don't travel around in their bus and follow them around just so they always have some fans.

It doesn't matter if you pay for the team buying tickets, you are still not part of the team. You might own rights to the team, you might have a say in what happens to the team, but in the long run unless you are given a jersey, legally contracted, and going to the practice you are not part of the team. We watch the president and congress on television, we spent time going to the movies, we watch the news, but you are not part of Congress, or part of the movie you watch, or on the news, so why do you get to say, just because you bought a fake jersey or spent time watching the game that you are part of the team. Those men and women work hard to get on those teams, while you yell and scream and be obnoxious to those of us who don't give a damn. You are still not part of the team. You are a fan of the team, you are supporting the team. You are not ON the team.

Flutist, typically 'our' implies that something is yours, not necessarily that you're part of it. Those pans in the kitchen? They are ours (mine and my fiance's). That team in my hometown? Yeah, that's ours too. I help pay their salary, and yes, that does make them mine. I agree with you all, about the 'we' thing. That is annoying. But there isn't anything wrong with ''our"

it's just a way of showing support for a team, nobody's actually claiming to be part of the team, so don't take it so seriously. unless i explicitly say i'm a fan of the team, you don't know that I'm a cowboys fan if I say "cowboys are doing pretty good this december" unless i say "cowboys are doing pretty good this december which is cool because i'm a fan of the cowboys", or if i'm wearing a cowboys shirt or hat or something. i have a cowboys sweatshirt and a cowboys hat that i'll wear if i'm running an errand (never at the same time though) that doesn't justify looking nice, but never when i'm talking about the team at school/work. but anyway, it's just figuratively speaking. you posted as "Notasportsfan", so maybe that's why you don't get it, since you don't actually have support for any team? also, this post is on the "tops" and "flops" haha,
